Nov 22, 2017

On Friday 17th November 2017, members of Beckfoot Heaton Primary School & Nursery travelled to London as one of three finalists in the “Happiest School” category in the National Happiness Awards.  At the glitzy award ceremony in Wimbledon, the school received a “Highly Commended” award, pipped at the post by the winning school from Peterborough, with a London primary school taking third place.

The school was shortlisted after submitting an entry which included video stories from children, quotes from parents and examples of the difference having happiness as a core value is making in school. The panel were particularly impressed with an unprompted video of a group of year 6 children who described our “happy school” as a “mixed community where people of different faiths can come, which helps them to get on better in the community.”  One girl, Abby Jacques, said that having a mixed community “gives a better understanding of everyone”.

The school also received recognition for the wonderful learning that the staff create which has seen the school’s results improve significantly over the last few years.

Zoe Mawson, headteacher at the school, said, “We are delighted to have been recognised for this award.  We are a school which is determined to be “great” and we teach children that if they are great learners and great people, then they have the best chance of having a great life. Happiness is a key to this. People who are happy are better learners and better people.”

The Awards Ceremony was attended by Zoe Mawson, Veronica Snowden and Sam Bolton (staff members), and mother and daughter Shazia Nazir and Amelia Qureshi. Amelia shone brightly at the awards and said, “We left the ceremony feeling very happy and proud to have represented Beckfoot Heaton. It was a very happy journey.”
